Námestovo

Námestovo (Hungarian Námesztó, Polish Namiestowo ) is the largest city and capital of the same name Okres in northern Slovakia.

Location and General Description

The city is situated (Slovak: Orava priehrada ) on the western shore of the Orava reservoir, and was first mentioned in writing in 1558.

Directly at the waterfront there is a large parking lot with tourist information center, an amphitheater for cultural events as well as several 2004 and 2005 built pensions. In the north of the city under the socialist rule over Slovakia was a slab settlement, in almost half of the population of Námestovo lives. Due to the hillside but from there you have a magnificent view over the lake.

The city is connected by a bridge to its southeastern part of municipality Slanická Osada, which disappeared from the reservoir in place Slanica, which was incorporated in 1953, was born. This district is nestled along the shore of the reservoir and consists mainly of one of the largest Hotel and restaurant management schools in Slovakia (about 1000 students) with a public restaurant and hotel operation, several guest houses and holiday homes and private holiday homes. On 25 January 2012, the local ice rink collapsed at the Hotel Altis Oravska. In the disaster there were no casualties as the former NHL pro Richard Zedník quickly responded and his team, rechtzeizig took the ice. The hall was completed in the summer of 2010 and opened in November of the same year.
