Nandini Satpathy

Nandini Satpathy ( born June 9, 1931 in Cuttack, † August 4, 2006 in Bhubaneswar ), was an Indian politician and author.

Political career

Nandini Sathpathy is one of the few women in Indian politics that came to high office without being part of a political dynasty or to have been patronized by men. As a member of the Indian National Congress Party, she was elected to Rajya Sabha in Orissa. Between 1966 and 1969, and again in 1970, she was Minister of Information of the Federal Government, and in between she was Minister of State to the Prime Minister and Minister without Portfolio.

Their close connection to Indira Gandhi paid off, as she promoted to "Chief Minister " ( Prime Minister of a federal - state ) was proposed by Orissa in 1972. In March 1973, the state was directly subordinate to the President for one year, but Satpathy acquired in March 1974 back their position. In 1974 she led the Indian National Congress in elections to the state assembly (Federal Chamber) to a victory. She remained in office until 1976 and is regarded as successful in Orissa Chief Minister. After the fall of Indira Gandhi in 1977 Nandini Sathpathy left the party and joined the Janata Party at. With the end of the Janata government in 1980 Sathpathy also left the party and was re-elected in the same year as an independent candidate. In 1985, she founded the regional party Jagrata Orissa; she was elected as the only candidate to parliament. In 1990, she returned to the Indian National Congress.

Literary career

Nandini Sathpathy was a renowned Oriya writer, her works have been translated into several languages. In 1998 she received for her outstanding contribution to regional literature Sahitya Bharati Samman Award to.
