Nantucket Sound

The Nantucket Sound is a roughly triangular area in the Atlantic Ocean on the coast of the U.S. state of Massachusetts. It is 48 km long and 40 km wide and is bounded by Cape Cod on the north, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard in the south to the west. Between Cape Cod and Martha 's Vineyard it is connected to the Vineyard Sound. Ports on Nantucket Sound are Nantucket and Hyannis.

The Nantucket Sound has important marine habitats for biodiversity ecologically and economically important species. "The Sound " has special significance for several protected animal and plant species and the fishing and industrial fishing.

The Sound is located at the confluence of the cold Labrador current flowing in the warm Gulf Stream. This creates a unique coastal habitat that the southern area of the North Atlantic species and the northern part of the Mid-Atlantic species represents. The Nantucket Sound has a high biodiversity and contains habitats ranging from the open sea to salt marshes and warm water beaches on the Cape and island coasts.
