Närpes
Närpes (Finnish: Närpiö ) is a city and municipality in the western Finnish landscape Ostrobothnia. It is located about 80 kilometers south of the city of Vaasa on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia. Besides Korsnäs and Larsmo Närpes is one of the three Finnish communities outside Åland, where only official language is Swedish. About 93 percent of residents are Finland Sweden.
Närpes was first mentioned in 1331 and included as a parish over the centuries much of the surrounding land. The municipality consists Närpes since 1867; 1973 went to the previously independent municipalities Övermark and Pörtom and parts of the community Korsnäs in it. 1993 Närpes received city rights. The community policy is determined by the Swedish People's Party, which in 2004 77.8 percent of the vote in the municipal election and so 28 of the 35 deputies situated in the city parliament.
To town include its Kirchdorf Närpes the places Bäckby, Böle, Finnby, Gottböle, Kalax, Kaldnäs, Karla, Klaresund, Knåpnäs, Kåtnäs, Norrnäs, Nämpnäs, Nasby, Pjelax, Rangsby, Ståbacka, Tjärlax, Träskböle, Västeryttermark and Österyttermark.
Närpes is a center of Finnish vegetable cultivation. In the greenhouses of the community around 60 % of the Finnish tomatoes and a third of Finnish cucumbers are drawn. Traditional boat building and fishing are also of great importance to continue to wood and metal processing industries have settled.
Worth seeing is the parish church of Närpes. It dates from the mid 16th century and has since been frequently enlarged and transformed. In the churchyard there are around 150 stalls, where the churchgoers for the duration of the service parked their horses. The wooden churches of Pörtom and Övermark are from the years 1781-1783, respectively, in 1878. Significant for tourism continues the theme park Öjskogsparken, which houses, among other things, a theater, a petting zoo and several museums.
