Naseby, New Zealand

Naseby is a small village and a former Borough in the Maniototo Plain in Central Otago on the South Island of New Zealand. It is named after the village of Naseby in the English Northamptonshire.

During the Otago gold rush of the 1860s Naseby was an important place. Large parts of the town from this period have been preserved and give the city the atmosphere of an inhabited museum.

At its peak the community had almost 4,000 residents, according to a change in the municipal boundaries of the city in the 1980s, with only about 100 inhabitants, the smallest Borough of New Zealand was. Naseby 2006 had 114 inhabitants.

Today, the site is visited by tourists seeking peace and quiet. The nearest town is about 15 km away in Ranfurly.

The winters are very strict in Naseby for New Zealand conditions. In Naseby one of the major curling events in the country takes place.

In Naseby is the only luge track in the southern hemisphere. Opened in 2008, 360 meters long railway is built like a natural toboggan run, but can be artificially frozen.
