Nathaniel W. Howell

Nathaniel Woodhull Howell ( born January 1, 1770 in Blooming Grove, New York, † October 15, 1851 in Canandaigua, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1813 and 1815 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Nathaniel Woodhull Howell was born about five years before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War in Orange County. In 1788 he graduated from Princeton College. Between 1789 and 1792 he taught in Montgomery. He studied law. After receiving his license to practice law, he began to practice in New York City. Between 1794 and 1796 he went to Tioga County after his work as a lawyer and 1796-1851 in Canadaigua. He was 1799-1802 Attorney General in West New York. In 1804 he sat in the New York State Assembly. Politically, he was a member of the Federalist Party.

In the congressional elections of 1812, for the 13th Congress Howell was the 21st electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he was the first representative of the district began his service in the U.S. House of Representatives on March 4, 1813. He retired after the March 3, 1815 out of the Congress.

After his time Congress, he was appointed in 1817 in the Commission, which determined the value of the Western Inland Lock Navigation Co.. Between 1819 and 1832 he was the First Judge in Ontario County. He died about ten years before the outbreak of the civil war in Canadaigua. His body was buried at the West Avenue Cemetery.
