National Assembly for Wales election, 1999

The elections to the National Assembly for Wales in 1999 were the first elections to the newly established National Assembly in Cardiff and took place on 6 May 1999. Were elected 60 deputies, 40 of them in constituencies by relative majority vote and 20 from party lists in 5 regions. After the Labour Party fell just short of an absolute majority, Labour initially formed a minority government. The leading candidate of the Labour Party, Alun Michael, was on 12 May 1999 First Secretary ( First Secretary ) and thus chairman of the regional government. After Alun Michael's resignation in February 2000, the newly elected First Minister Rhodri Morgan was formed in October 2000, a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats.
