Alun Michael

Alun Michael ( born August 22, 1943 in Bryngwran, Anglesey ( Ynys Môn ), Wales ) is a Welsh politician.

Life

After studying at Keele University, he worked as a youth and social workers 1971-1987. Michael began his political career as a candidate of the Labour Party in 1973 with the election as a member of the City Council ( City Councillor ) of Cardiff, where he remained until 1989.

In the elections of 1987, he was first elected as a successor of former Prime Minister James Callaghan on the Members of the House and represents there ever since the constituency of Cardiff South and Penarth. During this time he was first 1987-1988 Parliamentary Secretary Whip of the Labour Party in the House and at the same time 1987-1992 opposition spokesman for Welsh In occasions. Subsequently, he was from 1992 to 1997 Domestic political spokesman for the Labour Party.

After the election of the Labour Party in the 1997 General Election, he became a Deputy Interior Minister ( Deputy Home Secretary ). In October 1998, Prime Minister Tony Blair appointed him as successor to Ron Davies as part of a government reshuffle Minister for Wales ( Secretary of State for Wales). He held until his replacement by Paul Murphy in July 1999 this office.

In the first elections to the National Assembly for Wales ( Cynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru ) Alun Michael, 1999 was the top candidate of the Labour Party and was then on 12 May 1999 First Secretary ( First Secretary ) and thus chairman of the regional government. At the same time he was chairman of the Welsh Labour Party. On 9 February 2000 he Rhodri Morgan followed after his resignation in these offices. Between May 1999 and February 2000, he was also a member of the National Assembly for the constituency of Mid and West Wales.

2001 he was appointed Minister of State for Municipal Affairs and Local Environmental Quality Department for Environment, Food and Community Affairs ( Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, DEFRA). Following a cabinet reshuffle in 2005 he was Minister of State for Industry and the Regions, Ministry of Commerce and Industry ( Department of Trade and Industry, DTI). In May 2006, he was dismissed in a cabinet reshuffle.
