National Capital Development Commission

The National Capital Development Commission ( NCDC, National Capital Development Commission) was a planning authority of the Australian Government. It was created by the law, called the National Capital Development Commission Act 1957 in 1958. Their task was to complete the development of Canberra as the capital.

Under the direction of the NCDC, the population of Canberra's rose from 40,000 to 300,000. The NCDC was responsible for the planning and development of the city districts Woden Valley, Belconnen, Tuggeranong and Gungahlin. She also oversaw the construction of Lake Burley Griffin and the new parliament building. Chair of the NCDC were Sir John Overall (1958-1972), WC Andrews (1972-1974), Tony Powell (1974-1985) and Malcolm Latham ( 1985-1989 ).

The NCDC was advised by the National Capital Planning Committee (National Capital Planning Committee ). This was presided over by the Chairman of the NCDC and consisted of six representatives appointed by the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, the Australian Institute of Engineers and the Royal Australian Planning Institute and two other members with special knowledge and experience in cultural issues.

The NCDC was resolved with the enactment of the Australian Capital Territory Self- Government Act, 1988 ( Act self-government for the Australian Capital Territory ). Most functions were transferred to the new government of the Australian Capital Territory and the National Capital Authority.
