Navajo National Monument

The Navajo National Monument is a memorial and an archaeological reserve of the type of a national monument that lies within the Indian reservation of the Navajo Nation Reservation in Arizona.

The device consists of three regions, in each of which a ruin of a pueblo is protected in a rock niche. The three pueblos are among the best preserved buildings of the Anasazi and date from the 13th century. The buildings are close to the Shonto plateau with a broad view of the Tsegi Canyon system. The national monument has a visitor center, two campgrounds and two self-explanatory trails. Starting from the visitor center, guided hikes are offered by rangers.

The Sandal Trail is a self-explanatory trail, the viewpoints over the canyons and rugged canyon scenery. Signs on the roadside provide information about the flora and fauna. The 1.6 km long trail ends at the ruins Betatakin against the Betatakin Canyon. The two pueblos Betatakin Keet Seel and can be visited on a guided tour, the third Pueblo Inscription House has been closed since 1968 for tourists because its state of preservation does not allow visits. The National Monument was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966.
