Nectandra is a genus within the family of the laurel family ( Lauraceae ). The about 117 species are widely distributed in the Neotropics.

Description

Appearance and leaves

Nectandra species are evergreen shrubs or trees. The dark reddish - brown, brown or gray bark has small, wart-like lenticels.

The leaves are usually alternate, rarely arranged almost constantly against the branches. The simple, parchment-like or leathery leaf blades are pinnately. The leaf surfaces are hairy differently. There are no Domatien available.

Inflorescences, flowers and fruits

Add page and / or almost terminal, usually paniculate inflorescences many flowers are usually grouped together. There are flower stems available. The hermaphrodite flowers are triple double perianth. The bloom of both circuits are equal or the outer circle are larger. The bloom can be grown. The fleshy bracts are ending anthesis reflexed or spread and then usually fall off. Basically, three circles, each with three stamens are present. The stamens of the two outer circles are fleshy, papillose and often kronblattartig. that of the inner circle are reduced square or too small, staminodes or even missing. The anthers are sessile or there are stamens present. The most bald ovary is ovoid or nearly spherical, rarely ellipsoid. The most short style ends a conspicuous, almost capitate or discoid, rarely triangular or triangular- shield-shaped scar.

The enlarged fruit stalk goes into a more or less high fruit cup, which has a smooth edge or sometimes lobed by radicals of the bloom. The fruit cup sits the stone fruit. The usually ellipsoidal or nearly spherical, sometimes elongated or inverted ovoid drupes are blue to black when ripe.

The name Nectandra role. ex Rottb. nom. cons. was according to the rules of the ICBN preserved ( Vienna ICBN Art 14:10 & App. III ) compared to the previously published homonym ( Vienna ICBN Article 53 ) Nectandra PJBergius nom. rej, in Peter Jonas Bergius: . was published Descriptiones Plantarum ex Capite Bonae memory, ..., 1767, p 131. The genus Nectandra is derived from the Latin word nectar from the Greek nectar for nectar and from the Greek word for male andro from.

The approximately 175 Nectandra species are widespread in the Neotropics. In South America, about 125 species occur, to Central America, there are over Mexico by Florida about 34 species and on the Caribbean islands are home to about 15 species. In Panama there are about 18 species. 30 species come about before in Ecuador. In Florida, only one species is native.
