Neetze (river)

Neetzebrücke in Barum

The Neetze is a 53 km long right tributary of the river Ilmenau and springs in the state forest in Lower Saxony Goehrde southeast of Dahl castle.

Course

The Neetze flows in a northwesterly direction and empties into Fahrenholz, east of Winsen ( Luhe), in the Ilmenau, which is extended here to Ilmenau channel.

The river has several tributaries. Northwest of Neetze branches off the Neetzekanal, the west of Barum in the Ilmenau flows ( Lage53.34508810.383807 ). Between Echem and Barum ( at Lüdershausen ) widens the flow from the Reihersee and in the north east of the Barum Barumer lake.

Flow construction

In the 19th century the Neetzekanal was built between Walmsworth at Rullstorf and St. Dionysius, which receives the majority of the Neetzewassers. The original Neetze between Walmsworth and Echem was dismantled and is now partially visible only as wide trench. Only by the confluence of the march weather and breaking weather in Echem is also the old Neetze becomes a real river. Also at the Echem Neetze crosses under the built in the 1970s Elbe Lateral Canal.

Water quality

The Neetze has the water quality II: moderately polluted ( betamesosaprob ), except north of Dahl castle. Here, the water quality is II -III: critically polluted ( beta to alphamesosaprob ). Cause is the entry through the tributaries Strachau. This stream is in parts very dirty ( grade III).
