Nehunya ben HaKanah

Nechonja ben ha - Qana (also: Nehunya ha - Qane, Nehunya ben Hakanah; meaning of the name unclear) was the first generation in the first century, contemporary of Johanan ben Sakkais Tannaite.

He was a teacher of Ishmael and significant in the Hekhalotliteratur; in the Kabbalah he is regarded as the author of sefer ha - bahir and is actually possibly the author of the Kabbalistic work sefer hapelia.

Presumably he was very old and was wealthy. The Talmud emphasizes its Fried finished and his generosity. His method and results were teaching in reputation. Of importance to subsequent generations were his prayers when entering and leaving the schoolhouse ( Mishnah various editions beige prints ).
