Nellie McKay

Nellie McKay ( born April 13, 1982 in London) is an American singer, songwriter and actress.

Life

McKay was born in London, the daughter of Scottish drummer of the band The Colour Wheel Iain McKay and an American actress. After her parents divorced, she moved at the age of two years with her mother to New York, where they remained until 1994. After a year in Olympia, Washington, she moved back to the East Coast to Pennsylvania, where McKay attended high school.

In 2000, she began studying at the Manhattan School of Music. Bored and unhappy she left this, however, after two years and now joined in New York clubs as a singer and stand- up comedian and turned to the anti-folk scene.

In February 2003, she appeared in the opening act of the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players at Tonic, at New York's Lower East Side. For this they got good reviews, signed a contract with Columbia Records and launched in late summer 2003 production of her first album.

Their music includes a variety of genres from jazz to hip hop to disco and funk. The dynamic style and penetrating texts characterize it as an original singer. Their songs often include political issues. She is a member of PETA and their song Columbia Is Bleeding treats, cruel in their eyes, treatment of animals through the Columbia University. John John describes their opinion about their favorite politician Ralph Nader. In addition, she regularly performs at charity concerts.

Music

My critically acclaimed debut album Get Away from Me produced by sound engineer Geoff Emerick Beatles, released in February 2004 on Columbia Records. The title alludes to the song Come Away with Me by Norah Jones and expresses her dissatisfaction with the modern jazz from. McKay is the first woman who brought a double CD as a debut album on the market. Nellie McKay reached # 187 on the Billboard charts with Get Away from Me.

Pretty Little Head, which duets with K.D. long and includes Cyndi Lauper, was released after several delays in October 2006. Previously, there were disputes with the record company about the structure and the titles of the album. McKay insisted 23 tracks with a total length of 65 minutes to publish, but Columbia wanted to support only 16 tracks with a total length of 45 minutes. McKay left Columbia and released their album after their own ideas as a double CD in SpinART Records.

Obligatory Villagers appeared on 25 September 2007 in the U.S. and is to get only as import goods in Germany. McKay published this album at Hungry Mouse Records and dedicated it to the many vanishing attractions in the Poconos, a mountain range in Pennsylvania.

To the soundtrack of the film P. S. I Love You, in which she played Hilary Swank's sister, she steered the same song PS I Love You with.

Broadway

McKay entered 2006 for the first time on Broadway as Polly Peachum in the musical version of Threepenny Opera with Cyndi Lauper and Alan Cumming on. For her role, she was awarded a Theatre World Award for Outstanding Debut Performance.
