Theatre World Award

Theatre World Award is an American award, which is awarded annually since 1945 to a theater actor in New York City.

History

The prize was first awarded in 1945. Many theater actors have received the award in the past, including Julie Andrews, Phyllis Hyman, Lea Salonga, Carol Channing, Barbara Cook, Tim Daly, Loren Dean, Calista Flockhart, Glenne Headly, Ernestine Jackson, Patrice Wymore, Grace Kelly, Cloris Leachman, Carol Lynley, Lizbeth MacKay, Jayne Mansfield, Audra McDonald, Helen Mirren, Brenda Blethyn, Gillian Anderson, Patricia Neal, Brooke Shields, Maureen Stapleton, Meryl Streep, Bernadette Peters, Vanessa L. Election procedures

The winners are selected by a committee of New York theater critics. Currently ( 2009) there is a committee of Peter Filichia ( Theatermania.com ), Harry Haun ( Playbill ), Matthew Murray ( TakinBroadway.com ), Frank Cheque (New York Post ), Michael Sommers ( Newhouse Papers ), Doug Watt (New York Daily News) and Linda Winer (New York Newsday ). The coordinated by John Willis Theatre World and Ben Hodges.

Statuette

The award consists of a bronze sculpture that was created by the artist Harry Marinsky. The sculpture is known under the name " Janus ", a Roman god.
