Nelson Gutiérrez

Nelson Daniel Gutiérrez Luongo ( born April 13, 1962 in Montevideo, Uruguay ) is a former Uruguayan football player.

Club career

The 1.85 meter tall central defender began his club career in 1980 with the Uruguayan club Peñarol. With the Aurinegros Gutiérrez won the Uruguayan championship in 1981 and 1982, 1982 and 1983, the Copa Libertadores and the 1982 World Cup. In 1985, he played for the Colombian club Atlético Nacional. 1985/86 and in the following two seasons, he joined the Argentine capital club River Plate. Here he secured with his team-mates not only the Argentine league title in 1986, special continued in the Copa Libertadores by that year. In the 1988/89 season, he completed 17 games ( one goal) for Lazio in Serie A. Within this league, he moved then to Hellas Verona, where he in 1989/90 in 27 league games was used and scored three goals. He spent the next three seasons in Spain with CD Logroñés. In 1993 he returned to Uruguay for Peñarol, for whom he played in the 1996 Clausura his last six series. There, he was still four times in succession Uruguayan champion (1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996). He also reached a disastrous appearance twice in the years 1993 and 1994 the playoffs to the Copa Conmebol. At the end of his career he was in the 1997 Apertura still active for Defensor Sporting.

National

Gutiérrez participated with the Uruguayan Junior selection of the Junior World Championship in Japan in 1979 and finished with the team to third place. Also at the Junior World Cup 1981, he came to Uruguay Juniorennationalelf in all three group matches and the quarter-final defeat to Romania to train. In the same year he won the title at the Uruguay U-20 South American Championship 1981. The defender was also a member of the Uruguayan national football team. Overall, he graduated from his debut on 2 June 1983 at the game in Asunción against the selection of Paraguay until his last mission on 25 June 1990 at the World Cup match against the Italian national team 57 caps for his country. A goal he did not achieve it. With Celeste, he participated in the World Cup 1986 and World Cup 1990 tournament. Other tournaments, where he helped on Uruguayan side, were the Copa América 1983 and 1987, in which Uruguay won the title each. Also at the Copa América 1989, the Artemio Franchi Cup in 1985 and the Copa Artigas 1983 and 1985 he was a member of the squad.
