Neville Southall

Neville Southall MBE ( born September 16, 1958 in Llandudno / Wales ) is a Welsh former football goalkeeper.

Playing career

As a teenager it a professional career at Bolton Wanderers were denied. He learned the trade of mason and played in amateur teams.

In 1981, he began his professional career at Everton, for whom he completed 578 league games until 1997. With 92 internationals he is Welsh 's most capped player. He won with Everton, the English football championship in 1985 and 1987, the English FA Cup in 1984 and 1995 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1984/85. In the same year he was also elected Footballer of the Year in the UK. The " Big Nev " because of his size and his stout stature as a designated goalkeeper was especially famous for his quick reflexes that can not trust such a large and heavy man, and because of his penalty area.

After the End of career at Everton in 1997 Southall played as player-coach in Southend, Stoke, Torquay, Bradford and Shrewsbury. He is currently the coach of the Welsh U-19 national team. Due to its original type and its media presence Southall was given the status of a " cult figure "; then there exists, for example, a play entitled " Neville Southall 's Washbag ".
