Neville Wran

Neville Kenneth Wran AC QC CNZM ( born October 11, 1926 in Paddington, New South Wales, Australia) was an Australian politician of the Australian Labor Party (ALP ) as well as long-time Prime Minister of New South Wales.

Life

Study, a lawyer and deputy

After visiting the Nicholson Street Public School in Balmain and the Fort St Boys' High School Wran graduated in law at the University of Sydney, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in 1948. After that, he worked as a solicitor at the law firm Bartier, Perry and Purcell 1951-1957, he took after his legal approval in 1957 to work as a barrister on. Wran, in 1954 a member of the Australian Labor Party, was in 1967 a member of the Central Executive Committee of the party and was initially between April 1970 and October 1973 Member of the indirectly elected Legislative Council ( Legislative Council ) of the Parliament of New South Wales. During his long tenure, he took over as acting repeatedly and in addition various ministerial posts and was among other things, from April to May 1977 Acting Secretary of the Treasury in June 1977 and briefly Acting Minister of Public Works and ports in his first Cabinet. Later he was from May to June 1979 again Acting Secretary of the Treasury and then between January 1980 and October 1981 Treasury Minister and after October 1981 to February 1983 Minister for Mineral Resources.

Wran was also 1980-1986 National President of the Australian Labor Party.

Between February 1984 and July 1986 he was Minister for the Arts and at the same time in November and December 1984 short-term Attorney General. Later he was from January and February 1986 a little more than a month Minister of Industry and Minister for Decentralisation and small business and technology. Most recently he was from February to July 1986 Minister for Ethnic Affairs.

In July 1986, he resigned his offices and retired from political life. Instead, he became chairman of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation ( CSIRO ) and remained in this position until 1991. At the same time in this period, he was chairman, named after the politician and judge Lionel Murphy Lionel Murphy Foundation.

For his service he was awarded several times and received, among others, the Dutch Order of the Golden Ark ( June 1987), the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic ( October 1987), the Order of Australia ( January 1988) and the New Zealand Order of Merit (October 2009 ). In addition, the University of Sydney awarded him an honorary Doctor of Law in May 1995.
