Jack Renshaw

John "Jack" Brophy Renshaw AC ( born August 8, 1909 in Wellington, New South Wales, † July 28, 1987 in Northbridge, New South Wales) was a politician of the Australian Labor Party (ALP ) and between April 1964 and May 1965 Prime Minister of New South Wales.

Life

Business activities and deputy

Renshaw grew up in Binnaway on the Warrumbungle Shire and attended the Central School and the Patrician Brothers School and the Orange and Holy Cross College in Ryde. He then joined the family business in Binnaway, which initially included a dairy and a dairy farm. Later he founded with his brothers also butchers, grocery stores, oil and fuel depots.

Renshaw, who was in 1930 a member of the Australian Labor Party, began his political career in local politics when he became councilor in 1937 in Coonabarabran Shire and this until 1941 belonged and from 1939 to 1940 was its president. He was also a member of the 1939-1949 Electoral Council of ALP in Gwydir, and since 1940 member of the board of wheat farmers Union of Northern Australia.

On May 10, 1941 Renshaw was first a member of the Legislative Assembly ( Legislative Assembly ) of New South Wales and represented in this after several re- elections nearly 39 years to 29 January 1980 constituency Castlereagh. In addition, he was 1945-1950 Member of the Central Executive Board of the ALP in New South Wales.

In June 1950 he was Secretary of State for lands and was thereafter from April 1952 to March 1956 Secretary of State for Public Works. He was also first to February 1953 Vice- Minister for Local Government.

Ministers and Prime Minister

In February 1953, Prime Minister Joseph Cahill appointed him as Minister of Local Government in the Cabinet. He held this post from the end of Cahill's term of office in October 1959 and was at the same time, between March 1956 and October 1959 Minister of the major roads (Minister for Highways ).

Cahill's successor as Prime Minister, Robert Heffron, then appointed him in October 1959 to the Deputy Prime Minister. This function held Renshaw until the end of Heffrons term on 30 April 1964. Besides he was at the same time from October 1959 to April 1964 Treasury Minister ( Treasurer ) between May 1960 and March 1961 Minister of lands, from March 1961 to March 1962 Minister of Agriculture as well as between March 1962 April 1964 Minister for Industrial Development and Decentralisation.

At the same time he was deputy 1959-1964 Chairman of the ALP before he was then from 1964 to 1968 Chairman of the Australian Labor Party in New South Wales.

On April 30, 1964 Renshaw was as Heffrons successor eventually even the Prime Minister of New South Wales and held the office a little more than a year until his defeat by Robert Askin of the Liberal Party of Australia on 13 May 1965. During this time he was at the same time continue to Treasury Minister and Minister for Industrial Development and Decentralisation.

The Office of the Minister for the Treasury, he held again from May 1976 to January 1980 in the government of Prime Minister Neville Wran.

Renshaw was involved for 25 years in the Cricket Club of Sydney, the Sydney Cricket Ground, and was there 1952-1978 and trustee from 1972 to 1977 Chairman of the Trust Board.
