Ryde (New South Wales)

Ryde is a suburb of Sydney in Australia. The 13-km north-west of the Sydney city center and 8 km east of the city of Parramatta is. Ryde is the administrative center of the Local Government Area Ryde City and is one of the northern suburbs of Sydney. It lies on the north bank of the Parramatta River.

History

Ryde was named after the town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight in the UK. The name was probably given by GM Pope, who immigrated from the Isle of Wight, settled in the area and opened the " Ryde Store."

Ryde is the third oldest European settlement in Australia after Sydney and Parramatta. Originally the area was designated by the Aboriginal name Wallumetta, but then called the whole area between Parramatta River and Lane Cove River Field of Mars. The name Ryde was used from the 1840s and 1870, he was adopted for the city. The suburb has the oldest settler Australia, Addington at Victoria Road. Addington was built by the pardoned convict James Stewart in 1800. James Shepherd purchased the property in 1810 and built on the original sandstone building another house with six rooms.

Other old buildings in the area are the police station on the Victoria Road and the Willandra House at Willandra Street. The police station, a simple sandstone house, was an architect of the colony, Mortimer Lewis (1796-1879), and completed in 1837. Willandra is a two storey georganisches house, which was built in 1845 by the family Devlin. In later times it was used as an art gallery and headquarters of Ryde and District Historical Society. Both Willandra and the police station are listed in the Australian Register of the National Monuments.

In Siedlerhof Riversdale in the calf Street lived around 1900 the famous riverboat captain Robert Gascoigne.

Since Ryde is located on a hill, it was also called Top Ryde. The Ryde Swimming Centre was demolished and constructed as Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre again. Competitions of the 2000 Olympic Games were held there.

Trams

Most trams in Sydney drove from Fort Macquarie and Circular Quay down George Street to Broadway and Parramatta Road. In the rush hours trams drove from Station Square.

The lines after Drummoyne and Ryde went from Rozelle tram depot. After leaving the tram depots of Crescent Road and Commercial Road drove (now City West Link ) in Glebe along and turned left into Victoria Road. Then they crossed the Iron Cove Bridge and the former Gladesville Bridge, then turn right into the Blaxland Road. Then they drove the Blaxland Road behind the present headquarters of the City Council along and finally arrived at the intersection of Pope Street Devlin Street in Ryde.

Economy

Top Ryde is an unofficial place name in Ryde. There lies the industrial area of the suburb. It is centered around the intersection of Devlin Street and Blaxland Road. Top Ryde City is a large shopping center there. The first Top Ryde shopping center in this area was the second of its kind in Australia.

In Top Ryde is also the building of the Municipal Council of the City Ryde and a library.

2RRR is the local radio station. The Australian TV is broadcast in Ryde on 88.5 MHz FM.

Traffic

The Ryde Bridge over the Parramatta River connects Ryde in the South with Rhodes.

Buses from Sydney to Ryde go to Strathfield, Concord, to Macquarie University, to Burwood, in Sydney's city center ( about Pyrmont ), to West Ryde, Putney, Chatswood, Epping, to the Olympic Park, Parramatta and after Eastwood. The nearest railway station on a main line is located in West Ryde on the Northern Line of the CityRail.

Train

In Ryde there are state schools, such as the Ryde Secondary College (formerly Malvina High School ) and the Ryde Public School. There are also several private schools such as the Holy Cross College Ryde. The German International School Sydney was from 1992 to 2008 in Ryde resident and retired in August 2008 after Terrey Hills.

Churches

In Ryde, there is the St. Anne 's Anglican Church on Church Street, is buried in the Mary Ann Sherwood Smith, from the orchards of the Granny Smith apple originated. Every year you will be held the Granny Smith Festival in Eastwood honor. The church was built in 1826 and later enlarged. In the early days it was the center of public life in this district and is now listed in the Australian Register of the National Monuments. In the Church Street is also the Ryde Wesley Uniting Church.
