Newport Center
The Newport Center is a business, shopping and entertainment district in Newport Beach in the U.S. state of California. It extends on a hill above the harbor, from where you can overlook the Pacific Ocean. To the terrain around is the area of Corona del Mar, bordered to the west of the Newport Beach Country Club in the area. The main entrance is located on the California State Route 1 (Pacific Coast Highway ), which runs along the southern edge of Newport Center.
Many of the largest companies in the city have settled here. These include, among other things, the investment company PIMCO, life insurance and financial services company Pacific Life, the developer Irvine Company and the software company Day Software.
The center of Newport Center is the Fashion Iceland, which is a circle surrounded by the Newport Center Drive. The huge shopping center is home to many shops and department stores. At San Clemente Drive, the Orange County Museum of Art ( OCMA ) Friends of contemporary and modern art attracts. In the immediate vicinity there is an abundance of restaurants and other entertainment venues.
History
On the site of present-day Newport Center a Jamboree of the Boy Scouts of America was held in 1953. Alone, 50,000 Scouts from all 48 U.S. states as well as Alaska, Hawaii and 16 other countries took part in mind. A run in the nearby road was later baptized in memory of this event Jamboree Road.
Beginning of the 1960s began the local Irvine Company with the plans to build the Newport Center. It should primarily result in a business district with offices, shops and restaurants. As the site was chosen an area on the so-called Irvine Ranch, a large land holdings of the company. The excavation work they came across the remains of a petrified forest.
The first buildings were built in the International Style. For building design, the renowned architect William Pereira and Welton Becket were responsible. In 1967 finally opened the Fashion Iceland, a large shopping center, opened its doors. The dating from 1972 office of the company at the Pacific Life Newport Center Drive is considered an outstanding example of futurism in architecture.
In the following years, the Newport Centre has developed into a bustling shopping and business center in Newport Beach, which beyond the boundaries of Orange County also extends far is a strong attraction.
