NGC 3628

NGC 3628 is the name of a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sc in the constellation Leo. NGC 3628 has an area of ​​13.5 '× 4.3 ' (diameter of about 120,000 light years ) and an apparent visual brightness of 9.5 mag. Together with Messier 66 and Messier 65 forms this galaxy the Leo triplet, the nucleus of the M66 galaxy group.

On longer exposure photographs a tidal tail is seen extending from the galaxy. He probably was created by the interaction with the gravitational fields of the two neighboring galaxies M 65 and M 66

NGC 3628 was discovered on 8 April 1784 by the German - British astronomer William Herschel.
