NGC 4874

NGC 4874 is a very large elliptical galaxy, which lies almost in the center of the Coma cluster and about 12 may have brightness.

She is the type of the cD galaxies and dominates - along with a second giant galaxy called NGC 4889 - the gravitational field of the galaxy cluster. The two star systems have old age and probably evolved from the merger of several small spiral nebulae. Your distance is about 300 million light years.

NGC 4874 was discovered on 5 May 1864 by the German - Danish astronomer Heinrich Louis d'Arrest.
