Nick Baines (bishop)

Nicholas Baines named Nick ( born November 13, 1957 in Liverpool) is since 2011 the Bishop of Bradford in the Church of England and designated since February 4, 2014 Bishop of the newly created Diocese of Leeds

Life

Baines attended the Holt Comprehensive School in Liverpool. He studied German and French at the University of Bradford and graduated with a Bachelor with honors (BA (Hons ) ). He then worked for four years as a language expert at GCHQ, before he decided to serve in the Church and in Bristol studied theology at Trinity College. Here he earned a bachelor with honors (BA (Hons ) ) in theology.

Baines was ordained a deacon in 1987 and 1988 as a priest of the Church of England. His first job was as a curate at St Thomas ' Kendal and St Catherine's Crook ( Cumbria ). He then moved to Leicester, where he temporarily assistant pastor at Holy Trinity, Leicester, was then Vicar of Rothley ( 1992-2000). During this time he was also pastor a psychiatric facility for adults. In 1995 he became Dean of the country ( Rural Dean ) of Goscote. In 2000 he became Archdeacon of Lambeth in the diocese of Southwark. He was responsible for the children and young people of the diocese and a member of the General Synod of the Church of England from 1995 to 2005. In 2003 he was appointed Regional Bishop of Croydon in the diocese of Southwark. He was consecrated by the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams in the St Paul 's Cathedral and the bishop introduced on 8 May 2003 in Southwark Cathedral in his office.

2011 he was appointed to succeed David Charles James as Diocesan Bishop of Bradford. As part of the merger of the dioceses of Bradford, Ripon and Leeds and Wakefield Baines was appointed on 4 February 2014 the first diocesan bishop of the new diocese of Leeds, which includes the West Yorkshire region and the Yorkshire Dales. He will take office on Easter Sunday 2014.

Nicholas Baines has been married since 1980. The couple has three children.

Baines has a rich media experience and is often heard in the radio show Pause for Thought on BBC Radio 2. From his books two have been translated into German. Bishop Baines is a regular guest on church days and has held the 2013 sermon at the closing service of the German Protestant Church Congress 2013.
