Nicola Sabatino

Nicola Sabatino, also Nicholas Sabatini, (* 1705 in Naples, † April 4, 1796 ) was an Italian composer of the Neapolitan school.

Life and work

Nicola Sabatino was a son of Giovanni Sebastiano Sabatino (1667-1742), a violinist of the royal chapel in Naples. He received his education at the "Conservatorio di Sant 'Onofrio in Capuana ", where he was taught by Francesco Feo and Ignazio Prota, he received from Emanuele Barbella the violin lessons. Sabatini was primarily a composer of church music. He composed many Psalm, Magnificat and Tantum ergo - musical settings and other works for church use. Numerous preserved plants or performance data from the period 1725-1775 show evidence of its fertile compositional work.

Because of a disease by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, he received in 1735 in its place the commission to compose a part of the serenata Il tempo felice occasion of the wedding of the Prince of San Severo, Raimondo di Sangro. In 1752 he composed his first opera with Cleante, which was performed in Rome. Thanks to the success of Cleante 1754 he received the commission to compose the opera Arsace for the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. After that Sabatino turned back mainly to the church music. In 1758 he became conductor at the church of San Giacomo degli Spagnuoli and 1763 Kapellmeister at the Oratorio dei Filipini, both posts he held until his retirement in 1788. As a veteran of the Neapolitan musician, he led the 1774 public memorial in memory of the late composer Niccolò Jommelli.
