Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet

Nicolas -Toussaint Charlet ( born December 20 1792 in Paris, † October 29, 1845 ) was a French painter and draftsman.

Charlet was under the Empire writer, but lost his place under the Restoration and studied now in the studio of the painter Gros. He began with scenes from the life of a soldier, allowing him to portray the Grenadier Napoleonic times in different scenes in thrilling truth.

His Grenadier of Waterloo, and his episodes from the Russian campaign were epoch-making. His real field, however, was that of humor, with street boys, market women, laborers, porters, etc. are presented in inexhaustible variety.

Thus he created a gradually own genre in which hardly anyone could surpass him throughout his life; admiringly called Charlet also the Beranger of the cartoon.

At the age of 53 years, the painter Nicolas -Toussaint Charlet died on 29 October 1845.

His compositions are free from exaggeration, full of spirit and naivete, true masterpieces of satirical wit and the signatures it so well that some dramatic authors have borrowed the basic idea of their pieces of Charlet. His drawings and lithographs are countless.
