Nicolau Tolentino de Almeida

Nicolau Tolentino de Almeida ( born September 10, 1740 in Lisbon, Portugal, † June 23, 1811 same place ) was a Portuguese lawyer and poet. He is considered one of the greatest satirists of Portugal in the 18th century.

Life and work

Nicolau Tolentino father was a lawyer. He studied from 1760 even law at the University of Coimbra. His studies he interrupted, as it was used from 1767 as a teacher of rhetoric. He worked in this activity until 1777, when he was appointed professor of rhetoric and poetry, but from 1780 onwards was the teaching tired and henceforth until his retirement worked as a civil servant in the Royal Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As a poet he was first employed 1779-1783, but he wrote anonymously for various magazines. His works included sonnets, odes, and especially satirical works. In these he attacked the Lisbon bourgeoisie strongly suspect that he described as decadent and made ​​merry in the guise of a poor beggar Lisbon on the rich. During his lifetime only a narrow band with verses was published.

Honors
