Nicolaus Hermann

Nicolaus Hermann ( born October 21, 1818 in Sachseln; † August 4, 1888 ibid ) was a Swiss politician. He also served as Senate, National Council, Federal Court President and Diet Envoy and Chief Magistrate of Obwalden.

Life

Hermann was born the fourth and youngest child of wealthy businessman and local politician Alois Hermann and his wife Catherine Spichtig -Hermann ( 1783-1868 ). His father led the economy below the crown Sachseln church and was in 1817 elected to the church and district. After attending school in Sachseln, the college Sarnen and at the convent school in Engelberg Hermann studied philosophy at the Jesuit college short time in Freiburg and law at the University of Munich.

In 1839 he returned from Munich back to Obwalden and led the tavern his father, the Old Crown, on. In 1847 he married Anna Maria Josepha Ignatia ( 1819-1889 ). The marriage remained childless.

Work

1839 Hermann councilor of Sachseln and district administrator in Sarnen. 1841 to 1842 he was country treasurer and in years 1842 /43 and 1845/46 the reigning Country Ammann. During this time he was several times ambassador of Obwalden on the confederate hearing. Also in 1848 he was re-elected ruling Landammann. Hermann advocated the new Federal Constitution of 1848. He was in 1849 the Council of States of Canton Obwalden. This office he led from 23 years until he failed in a renewed re-election in 1872. From 1853 to 1874 he was a member of the Federal Court, which he was president in 1865.

Hermann was with Franz Wirz one of the political mentor sons of Nikodem Spichtig. This had led as a ring master from 1815 to 1847 and as Chief Magistrate in 1821 the canton of almost three decades. While Hermann Senate was Wirz worked as a National Council.

1862 Hermann founded the first newspaper in Obwalden, Obwalden weekly newspaper, which he renamed in Obwalden newspaper 1865. Until the termination of the newspaper at the end of 1873 he was the editor and publisher of the newspaper. Since 1870, appeared with the Obwaldner Volksfreund a rival newspaper.

1878 Hermann moved into the Obwaldner Governing Council and was again repeatedly Country Ammann (1878, 1881, 1884 and 1887). He also has been delegated again to Bern, but now as the National Council. This office he led until his death in 1888.

On the design of Obwalden Canton Constitution of 1850 and its revision in 1867 as well as in the total cantonal legislation Hermann played a significant role.

Thus Hermann was the outstanding Obwaldner politicians during nearly 50 years.
