Niedergesteln with the ruins of Gestelnburg

Niedergesteln ( Valais German: Geschtillu; French Châtillon -le- Bas ) is a municipality in the district of West Raron in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. The name originates from Latin castellum Gesteln ( = lock ).

Total area: 1746 hectares, of which 1213 hectares in the World Heritage area. It was the seat of the Lords of the turn, who ruled their possessions from there in the Middle Ages.

The village lies at the foot of the built in 12th century by the Lords of turn Gestelnburg. Local attractions include the walk and illuminated ice age cave inside the castle rock. The village is characterized by both the village center, on the other hand by the Jolibachschlucht. Along this gorge is reached by hiking trails, irrigation channels and the BLS south ramp into Jolital, which is part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage.
