Nieuwoudtville

Province

Nieuwoudtville is a town in the municipality Hantam, Namakwa District, Northern Cape Province in South Africa. Cape Town is 350 kilometers to the south. In 2011, there were 2,093 inhabitants.

The place is located in approximately 1,000 meters above sea level on the Bokveld ( Bokkeveld ) plateau. The approach from the west is via the Vanrhyns Pass, offering a view of the Namaqualand and the Knersvlakte.

The place is dubbed "the Bulb Capital of the World" ( flower bulb capital of the world ). It is believed that this occurs, the world's largest concentration of different bulbs / bulb plants. These geophytes catch - after the first summer rains - in March / April to flower. The flowering period then runs through to October, with a peak in July. Nieuwoudtville has a special geographical location: From here, four different vegetation zones are only 25 kilometers away: Karoo, Bushmanland, Knersvlakte and Namaqualand.

History

It was founded in 1897 on the farm Groenrivier ( German: "Green River "). The area was also known as Groene Rivier, Bokkeveld and Onder Bokkeveld. Is named the place after the family Nieuwoudt, in their possession until its sale in 1897, the country was at the Dutch Reformed Church.

Be managed around 200 species of plants with more than 300 species, of which 40 percent onion plants. Also protected here is the endemic Bulbinella latifolia var doleritica.
