Nigerien parliamentary election, 1970

The parliamentary elections in Niger in 1970 took place on 22 October 1970. Elected were the fifty deputies of the National Assembly of Niger.

Background

During the First Republic (1960-1974) there was a one-party system in Niger the Nigerien Progressive Party (PPN - RDA) under President Hamani Diori. The parliamentary elections of 1970 were neither competitive nor free. There were only allowed candidates of a PPN RDA list. The elections took place at the end of the proposed five-year term of the National Assembly. President Hamani Diori had just been let, re-elected in the presidential election on October 1, 1970.

Results

From 1,906,283 registered voters went to the polls officially 1851146. This corresponds to a voter turnout of 97.1 %. 1,850,968 ballots counted as valid and 178 invalid.

Follow

On November 21, 1970 President Hamani Diori carried out a reshuffle. As President of the National Assembly Boubou Hama remained in office. The First Republic ended on 15 April 1974 with the coup by Seyni Kountché, who had also dissolve the National Assembly. During the régime d'exception (1974-1989) there was no nigrisches Parliament.
