Nikkō (priest)

Nikko (Japanese日 兴; * 1246, † 1333), Nichiren Shoshu and the Soka Gakkai also called Nikko Shonin, one of six senior disciples of Nichiren and was regarded as the founder of Fuji-Schule/Linie which later developed into the Nichiren Shoshu. His full name was Buddhist Hawaki - bō Byakuren Ajari Nikko (Japanese日 兴 伯 耆 房 白莲 阿闍梨 日 兴).

Nikko was at the center of the first disputes that occurred after Nichiren's death among his pupils. Because of this conflict, he left the Kuon -ji temple and founded with the support of basic manager Najo Tokimitsu the Taiseki -ji Temple, which is the main temple of Nichiren Shoshu today. Nikko was with Nitchō also the founder of Ikegami Honmon -ji temple ( temple of Nichiren Shoshu not today ), where he also died.

After the Nichiren Shoshu doctrine certain Nichiren Nikko as his immediate successor at Kuon -ji. The documents that allegedly prove this, however, are considered controversial and are referred to by other schools of Nichiren Buddhism as a forgery. A scientific study this are lacking.
