Nikolay Dobrolyubov

Nikolai Alexandrovich Dobroliubov (Russian Николай Александрович Добролюбов; born 24 Januarjul / February 5 1836greg in Nizhny Novgorod, .. .. † 17 Novemberjul / November 29 1861greg in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian literary critic, journalist, materialist philosopher and revolutionary Democrat.

Biography

Dobroliubov was born the son of a priest in Nizhny Novgorod on the Volga. He showed from childhood to an extraordinary interest in literature and a great talent for writing. After attending a religious school in Nizhny Novgorod Dobroliubov went in 1853 in the capital city of Saint Petersburg and took there to study at a teacher training college at which he graduated four years later.

While still a student he was a member of an opposition student group and was involved in the publication of an illegal newspaper. In 1856 he became acquainted with the authors Chernyshevsky and Nekrasov know. Soon after Dobroliubov began his career as one of the editors of the liberal literary journal Sovremennik. There he published as lead author of a satire - section among other parodies and feature articles.

After Dobroliubov 1860 with only 24 years with tuberculosis, he had to give up his editor activity and traveled to other European countries in order to seek medical treatment. After several months of unsuccessful treatment attempts and stay in Germany, France, Switzerland and Italy, he returned in July 1861 returned to St. Petersburg, where he died in November of the same year. He was buried on the Wolkowskoje Cemetery.
