The Nizhny Novgorod Airport (Russian Международный аэропорт Нижний Новгород ) is an international airport in Russia, located some 15 kilometers southwest of the center of the metropolis Nizhny Novgorod.

General Description

The Strigino Airport was put into operation on 15 July 1923 and originally served primarily as airfield for connections between Nizhny Novgorod and Moscow. He wears the status of international airport since 1939. Strigino This is not only one of the oldest airports in the Volga region, but also of the whole of Russia. In 1993 Strigino acquired the status of an international airport. Currently, a direct connection to Frankfurt am Main is offered except domestic Russian flights, beyond here mainly national charter flights are handled.

Due to the relative proximity Nizhny Novgorod to Moscow ( about 430 km) is the Strigino Airport as one of the reserve for the four airports Moscow passenger airports. In addition, parts of the airport are still in use as a military airfield.

Although Nizhny Novgorod is one of the largest cities in Russia, the number of passengers the airport Strigino is relatively low. Thus, in 2007 only slightly more than 280,000 passengers were handled. This is partly due to the no longer applicable as a contemporary infrastructure of the airport. For this reason, there are short-to medium-term plans an extensive renovation of the terminal building, including the construction of a new terminal for up to three million passengers annually. The original plans of the Moscow City Government to up to 100 million U.S. dollars to invest in infrastructure Striginos were, however, rejected the end of 2008. Meanwhile, plans to Renova Holding Viktor Vekselberg to build a new passenger terminal at the Nizhny Novgorod airport.

In 2007, the net profits of the operating company oblasteigenen MAN amounted to 13.679 million rubles, which corresponded to an increase of more than sixteen times over the previous year.

Transport links

The airport is located in the south of Nizhny Novgorod city area and is so far only by car, buses or minibuses ( called Marschrutki ) to reach. The number 11 bus and minibus lines T.29 connect the airport to the metro station Park Kultury, while the bus line 20 runs to the Moscow Railway Station. Under the proposed modernization of the airport, the construction of a railway branch line to the terminal is planned ( following the example of the Moscow airports Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo ).
