North Dumfries

North Dumfries is a town in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo in southwestern Ontario, Canada.

Geography

The area of North Dumfries surrounds the city of Cambridge from the southwest, south and southeast. The community is located 15 kilometers southwest of Waterloo and 50 kilometers northeast of Hamilton. The Highway 401 from Toronto to London, also called Macdonald -Cartier Freeway leads, across the area of ​​North Dumfries.

History

William Dickson bought the land of present-day North Dumfries in 1816 for 24,000 pounds and named it after his home town of Dumfries in Scotland. In the same year he had surveyed the land and took 1817, the first sawmills in operation. 38 families were counted with a total population of 163 people. In 1819, the first town meeting of North Dumfries took place. In 1820, Scottish settlers migrated further into the region.

Demography

In 2006, a total population of 9063 persons found with an average age of 39 years. Almost 90 % of the population speaks English as a first language.
