Northern Peninsula Area Region

- 10.883333333333142.38333333333Koordinaten: 10 ° 53 ' S, 142 ° 23' O The Northern Peninsula Area (Area ) is a Local Government Area ( LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland. The area is 1019 km ² and has about 2300 inhabitants.

Geography

The region is situated at the tip of Cape York Peninsula in the extreme northeastern part of the State about 2200 km north of the capital, Brisbane. It consists of a large contiguous portion on the north west side and a smaller area on the eastern tip of the island.

The largest town and administrative headquarters of the LGA is Bamaga with about 1050 inhabitants. The region also includes Injinoo, New Mapoon, Seisia, Umagico.

History

The Regional Council of the Northern Peninsula Area was founded in 2008 as a merger of five Aboriginal Councils ( Bamaga Iceland, Injinoo, New Mapoon, Seisia Iceland and Umagico ).

Management

The Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council has six members. Five Councillor elected by the residents of the five divisions ( constituencies ) ( Bamaga, Injinoo, New Mapoon, Seisia and Umagico ). The Council President and Mayor ( Mayor ) is also elected by all residents of the region.
