Nothhelm

Nothhelm (also Nothelm, Noðelm, Noðhelm, Noþhelm, † October 17 739 ) was 735-739 Archbishop of Canterbury.

Nothhelm was first priest of St Paul's Cathedral in London and was in personal contact with the Venerable Bede, to whom he gave for his Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum information from the history of Kent and the surrounding areas. From a trip to Rome Nothhelm brought copies of letters Gregory I the Great in the papal library in England, which were included in Bede's Ecclesiastical History.

Nothhelm 735 was appointed Archbishop and received 736 by Pope Gregory III. the pallium. In the same year ( 736 ) consecrated Nothhelm Cuthbert ( Hereford ), Heordwald / Here Forest ( Shirburn ) and Ethelfrid ( Elmham ) bishops.

Bede dedicated his book Nothhelm In regum Librum XXX quaestiones in which he answered thirty questions Nothhelms to the Biblical Book of Kings. Even the missionary Boniface was with Nothhelm in correspondence.

After the death of Bishop Aldwine of Mercia in 737 whose diocese was divided: Witta was Bishop of Lichfield and Tocca ( ​​Totta ) Bishop of Lincoln.

Nothhelm died on 17 October 739 and was buried in Canterbury. He was later canonized. His feast day is October 17.
