Rauli ( Nothofagus alpina).

Description

The rauli is a deciduous tree that reaches up to 40 m in the natural sites stature heights, in Europe almost 30 m. The tree crown is narrow and lively with thick ascending branches in young trees. The crown of older trees is broadly conical. The bark of the trunk is dark green, the tree still young with many lenticels; of age, the bark is greenish gray with evenly distributed brown cracks that continue to the stronger branches. The branches are green, later dark brown and very rough by the stocking with small warts. The buds are maroon, narrow, cone- shaped and about 1 centimeter in size. The 4-8 cm long leaves with yellow stem have significant depth 15-18 pairs of nerves. The autumn color is golden yellow to crimson.

Dissemination

The rauli is native to central Chile and in the province of Neuquen westargentinischen.

The tree is hardy in Central Europe. The rauli is unusually vigorous and is therefore planted in forest cultivation trial in Germany.

System

The two botanist Eduard Friedrich Poeppig and Stephan Ladislaus finite set the plant in 1838 in the genre of beech (Fagus ), by setting up the two taxa Fagus alpina and Fagus procera. Both taxa were displaced in 1871 by the Danish botanist Anders Sandoe Oersted in the genre of note book ( Nothofagus ) and got the taxa Nothofagus alpina and Nothofagus procera. Today Nothofagus alpina is the valid taxon and Nothofagus procera merely a synonym. Other synonyms for the type are:

Wood

This species produces a gray to red-brown wood. It is suitable for medium loads in interior design, furniture, turnery. It is easy to work and polishes well, but is not weather resistant.
