Notholirion thomsonianum

Notholirion is a genus in the family Liliaceae ( Liliaceae ). It consists of only 5 species. The genus is closely related to the lily ( Lilium) and the genus Fritillaria, to which some species were previously counted.

Description

Notholirion are perennial, herbaceous plants and achieve a plant height of 60 to 150 cm, in the case of Notholirion macrophyllum 18 to 30 cm. The bulbs are narrow ovate to nearly cylindrical, and are composed of the thickened approaches near the ground sheets together, they are protected by a thin brown skin. The roots are numerous, at its upper part form sch Brutzwiebelchen, these are egg-shaped and consist of several white scales at a solid protective skin. Notholirion are monokarp, so the plants die after flowering, but leave several small bulbils that are blühreif again after a few years.

Pro racemose inflorescence there are 2 to 24 flowers. The bell-shaped or cup-shaped threefold, hermaphroditic flowers six identically shaped bloom cladding ( Tetalen ), which are colored pale to strong violet (except Notholirion campanulatum ). The ovary is dreikammerig. Are formed elongated capsule fruits. In each fruit capsule numerous winged, flat seeds are included.

Dissemination

The genus has - with the exception of Central Asia spread Notholirion koeiei - her area in the Himalayas. The species of the genus are mostly alpine, Myanmar, China ( three types ), Afghanistan, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sikkim, as well as Iran and Iraq home. Notholirion bulbuliferum, Notholirion macrophyllum and Notholirion campanulatum prefer cool and moist sites in the shade in humus soil, Notholirion thomsonianum and Notholirion contrast koeiei rather Mediterranean site conditions.
