Novi Beograd

Novi Beograd ( Serbian Cyrillic Нови Београд, German equivalent of " New Belgrade ") is a municipality of Belgrade. With around 390,000 inhabitants and an area of 40.71 km ² it is also the largest municipality of Serbia. The main characteristic of Novi Beograd is its flat surface quite in contrast to the old town Belgrade. Up to Bežanija Novi Beograd is built on an area that was a swamp until 1948.

Of all Belgrade's municipalities of Novi Beograd has the largest green area, a total of 3.47 km ², although the first impression suggests the opposite.

In 1713 the village Bežanija, emerged from the Novi Beograd was first mentioned. 1923 plans were made to expand Belgrade on the left bank of the Sava. Due to the Second World War, the foundation stone was laid for the extension until April 11, 1948. The district was built by the Yugoslav labor brigades. As a city district of Belgrade, Novi Beograd was incorporated in 1952. The connection across the Sava to the city center of Belgrade by two railways and four road bridges, of which the Gazela and Brankov most are the most important.

The day the church will be celebrated April 11, the day of laying of the cornerstone.
