Nuel Belnap

Nuel D. Belnap, Jr. ( born May 1, 1930 in Evanston, Illinois) is an American philosopher and logician.

Life

Nuel Belnap graduated from the University of Illinois and completed his studies in 1952 with a Bachelor of Arts. Then he moved to Yale University: In 1957, he was Master of Arts and laid in 1960, the doctor examination. From 1958 to 1960 he was already here as a research assistant ( Instructor ) from 1960 to 1963 as Assistant Professor of Philosophy active. In 1963 he was an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was promoted to professor in 1966 and from 1984 held the Alan Ross Anderson Chair of Philosophy until his retirement in 2011. During this time he was also active in the fields of sociology, history of science and philosophy, and Intelligent Systems. He also held visiting professorships at Oxford, Irvine (California ), Bloomington (Indiana), Padua (Italy) and at the Australian National University true. In 2008 he was elected by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as a member.

Work

Belnap has worked in various fields of logic and ontology. The logical relationships between questions and answers, problems of inference and implication ( Relevance logic Belnaps tetravalent logic), the logic of action and the indeterminism of space and time are some of his topics. He is also co-author of two conceptions of truth: the truth prosententialen theory and the revision theory of truth.
