ÖBB Class 4020

The Series 4020 is an electric railcar ÖBB, which was developed for urban transport and the S -Bahn operation.

Details

The series 4020 was built from 1978 to 1987 especially for public transport in metropolitan areas such as the Tyrolean Inn Valley and the Greater Linz and on the S -Bahn Vienna. In planning the 4020 series is based on the older 4030 series, but trod in the design of the suspension ( air suspension) as well as in the facilities of the interior of new ways and also built a more powerful engines.

In the series 4020 is a three-piece train, consisting of the railcars ( 4020 ), the intermediate cars ( 7020 ) and the control car ( 6020 ). Each of these cars is provided with two wide entrances with automatic sliding doors per car side.

The intermediate car ( 7020 ) is provided at one end of the car with 2 downpipe toilets. In some cars, the toilet has already been converted to a closed system. Although, theoretically, two toilets were present, is usually only one in operation. In some sets one is equipped with a closed system, and the other has only an open system. On the doors hang stickers that say that the toilet will be closed due to hygienic conditions in the metropolitan area. However, this is not the case in general.

From the series 4020 120 units were built. As of 1996, the railcars were modernized: The Brose bands to target display were replaced by matrix displays, secured the doors with light barriers and improves the interior. Some trains were repainted in the usual ÖBB for the transport red / gray oblique style. Since late 2002, the trains are also equipped with an emergency brake device (EBO ) and thereby redrawn in 4020.2. In many sets of the upholstery of the seats and the floor covering has been renewed.

Currently, the number 4020 is only used in the Vienna S -Bahn and regional trains. On the other above- mentioned routes, the number 4020 has been replaced by Talent trains or locomotive-hauled push-pull trains.

Successor

As the successor railcars of the type were provided talent with the internal designation number 4023/4024 originally. After numerous tests in 2003, the series was 4023 taken in early 2004 in the Salzburg area and the number 4024 on the Vienna express train regularly in operation.

This and 2006 procured sets dissolved in Tyrol and Vorarlberg 4020 from, replaced on the Wiener -speed rail but for now only the auszumusternden railcars of class 4030th After there were repeated problems with the talent employed, the original plan was abandoned, the talent for to use the Vienna S-Bahn. Thus, the 119 railcars of class 4020 remained still in operation. A railcar had to be retired after the accident.
