Howella brodiei
The Howellidae are one in 2007, newly established family of related bass fish, belonging to the three genera that were previously attributed to the cod perch ( Percichthyidae ) and the lantern bellies ( Acropomatidae ). All species of the family live in the sea, usually at greater depths from 100 to 1800 meters
Features
The types of Howellidae 7 to 10 cm long. They are characterized by a characteristic structure of the infra orbital bones ( skull bone ), in the reduction of the forward rails portion of the hyomandibular, the lack of contact between the fin rays carriers ( Pterygiophoren ) of the first and second dorsal fins, a free flowing rayless fin rays carrier before the second dorsal fin, 16 vertebral the tail spine, a characteristic structure of the scales and some other features.
Outer systematics
The closest relatives of Howellidae are deepwater cardinal fish ( Epigonidae ) and the Lateolabracidae. Together they form the new subordination Epigonoidei.
