Offa of Essex

Offa ( † after 709) was of about 694-709 King of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Essex. He ruled jointly with his brothers and Sigeheard Swaefred.

Life

Offa was the son of the king Sighere ( about 664- about 690 ), who ruled ( 664 to 694 microns) together with Sebbi. The circumstances of his accession are unknown. Maybe he already followed by 690 to 705 after his father or to Sebbis sons. In most cases, the following theory is favored today: Sebbi thanked 694 seriously ill in favor of his sons Sigeheard and Swaefred and Sigheres son of Offa, who ruled together, and became a monk. During his lifetime, his Mitkönige Offa might play a minor role. He had his seat of power probably in Aldermanbury ( London). Perhaps the monastery at Westminster was set by him repaired or refounded. King Offa abdicated in 709 and left his wife to get together with King Cenred of Mercia and Bishop of Worcester Ecgwine to go on pilgrimage to Rome. The two kings were monks there. His life and his death were not known.
