Sigeheard of Essex

Sigeheard (also Sighardus, Sigehard or Sigiheard ) was of about 694 to 705 after King of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Essex. He ruled jointly with his brother Swaefred and Offa.

Life

King Sebbi seems his sons Sigeheard and Swaefred to have participated in the late 680er years of the reign, as they signed charters as rex (king). But the title may be a later addition. Swæfheard ( 687/688-692/694 ), another brother, reigned as king over the western parts of Kent.

Sebbi thanked 694 seriously ill in favor of his sons Sigeheard and Swaefred and Sigheres son of Offa, who ruled together, and became a monk. In the 680er years Surrey came under the control of Wessex, but still belonged to the East Saxon diocese of London, which led to tensions between the mighty King Ine of Wessex and Essex, which could be solved 705 at the Synod of Brentford. Sigeheards date of death is unknown, but was between 704 and 709
