Geography

Geographical Location

The village is located at the output of the Oker valley between cocks and Adenberg in the south and in the north Sudmerberg. Oker is divided into two unofficial parts: Oberoker, south ( and closer to the resin ) of the railway line, and Unteroker, north of it.

The Oker river gave its name to the village.

History

Founded in 1527 as a smelter to process the ore of Rammelsberg, Oker was a center of the Harz metallurgy (see lead smelter Oker, Zinkoxydhütte Oker and zinc smelter Harlingerode ). 1819 Post Expedition Braunschweigische mail was opened. This was the opening of the operation of the railway line between Goslar and Vienenburg moved ( on March 23, 1866) after the station of Oker. From 1952 to 1972 Oker was a separate town in the district of Wolfenbüttel. On 1 July 1972, they became part of the county town of Goslar.

Religions

The two Lutheran parishes of St. Paul ( Unteroker ) and Martin Luther ( Oberoker ) form since October 2005, the joint parish Oker; still there in 1952, inaugurated Catholic St. Conrad Church ( branch church of the parish of St. James Major in Goslar ), and a Turkish- Muslim community ( Oberoker ).

Sports

The trail system at Oker is well developed; in the town itself there are two sports halls, sports fields and tennis courts and an outdoor pool are available.

The largest sports club is. VfL Oker with named after Helmut Sander sports hall, which is mainly for the well- known table tennis department To play the first men's team in the Oberliga West and the first women's team in the Regionalliga Nord.

Today in Oker chemical- metallurgical, recycling and specialty industrial enterprises, such as the resin -Metall GmbH and the Norzinco. The largest employer in the district of Goslar and Okers is a work of the chemical company HC Starck.

Traffic

The Oker railway station is on the railway tracks Hannover -Hildesheim -Bad Harzburg ( railway Oker - Goslar, KBS 320) and Braunschweig-Goslar/Bad Harzburg Kreiensen ( railway Vienenburg - Goslar, KBS 353/354 ), whereas each about hourly or two hourly compounds. Bus lines connect with Oker Goslar and Bad Harzburg. By Oker the highway runs 498 ( Goslar, Osterode am Harz ). The Federal Highway 6 ( Cuxhaven- Görlitz) now leads north past Oker.

In the town three kindergartens, two primary schools and one secondary school and a comprehensive school (IGS ) in the structure are available.
