Oliver Seraphin

Oliver James ( " OJ" ) Seraphin ( born August 2, 1946) is a dominicanischer businessman and politician. He was Prime Minister from 1979 to 1980 in his country.

The merchant's son from the Dominica 's capital, Roseau studied after completion of the Grammar school for several semesters economy in Cuba and the United States. Returned to his home he began after a brief spell as an insurance agent with the highly successful development of its own airline, the Dominica Airways, were among the nearly three DC-6 freighters.

His political career began - with the prospect of the independence of Dominica, which should be 1978 - 1975 in the cabinet of Patrick John as Minister of Communications and housing. A year later, he was Minister of Economic Affairs. From the machinations of John - government, marked by personal advantage and corruption, Oliver Seraphin distanced very strongly and declared in May 1979 his resignation from all government offices. This attitude gave him the confidence of the CNS ( Committee for National Salvation ), the government fell in June 1979 and John Oliver Seraphin sworn as Prime Minister on 25 June 1979.

Seraphins term began literally Storm: Hurricane "David" devastated large parts of the island state in August 1979, repairing the damage and reconstruction cost residents and government much power. Seraphin took advantage of the disaster by building long-term bilateral relations in the context of requests for assistance from other countries. His " aid-for - Dominica " tours have taken him to Canada, France, Venezuela, Barbados, the United States and other countries.

Seraphins commitment to his country was unique. What he underestimated in his zeal, however, was the fact that its wide range of foreign policy activities could certainly allow misinterpretations and his frequent absences room left for political intrigue.

During his tenure, the overthrow of the Shah of Persia fell by the Islamist regime of Ayatollah Khomeini. Seraphin acted - in cooperation with the CIA - an agreement from which envisaged to grant the Shah's family against such payments to the African nation of Dominica and investing in the infrastructure of the country's immigration and citizenship. Background was the fact that dominica African citizens are citizens of the British Commonwealth at the same time. This was the Shah of open access to all Western states, without the compromise had to be politically opposite the new Iranian government.

This trade - agreed behind closed doors - and others was the opposition leader of Seraphins Dominica Labour Party, Mary Eugenia Charles of the Freedom Party told. Mrs. Charles launched May 18, 1980, a month before the general election in Dominica, a message to the Washington Post, after Oliver Seraphin large sums of money for support for the Shah's family had put into his own pocket. The paper printed the message as well as unaudited other newspapers reprinted them. And an entirely surprised Seraphin was chased after returning from a trip abroad on the applied population from the country.

His rehabilitation was, of course, shortly thereafter - the elections but had since taken place, Eugenia Charles was prime minister. Disappointed and bitter, Oliver Seraphin pulled thereupon retired from politics and devoted himself to the establishment of a department - " Floral Gardens " - inland on the edge of the Indian reservation.

The professing and practicing Christian is married and has six children with his wife Lily. As before, Oliver J. Seraphin - called by the people "OJ " - one of the most respected and popular citizens of Dominica.
