Olof Molander

Olof Johan Harald Molander ( born October 18, 1892 in Helsinki, † May 26, 1966 in Stockholm) was a Swedish film and theater director, actor and theater director.

Life

Olof Molander was born in 1892 as son of director and writer Harald Molander and Swedish actress Lydia Wessler. His older brother Gustaf Molander four years later was also a well-known Swedish director and actor.

He began his career as a stage actor, but soon moved into directing. In 1919 he led the first time in the Swedish National Theatre Royal Dramatic Theater ( Dramatan ) in Stockholm directed specifically in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. On Dramatan he was next to Alf Sjöberg long to the most important theater directors in Sweden.

In 1934 he was even chosen as the director of the Royal Dramatic Theatre. An influential Office that he coined until 1938 by a hard, sometimes relentless pace. Finally, he was forced to resign and Pauline Brunius succeeded him. His reputation as a director of which, however, remained unaffected, especially his productions of various plays by August Strindberg are legendary. Ingmar Bergman saw in him a great source of inspiration.

Molander was active as a director of the Swedish film and theater. In 1966 he died at the age of 73 years in Stockholm.
