Olov Svebilius

Olof (also Olov or Olaus ) Svebilius ( rarely also Swebilius; * January 1, 1624 in the parish of Ljungby, today part of the municipality of Kalmar, † June 29, 1700 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian and Archbishop of Uppsala.

Life

Svebilius studied from 1638 at the University of Uppsala from 1640 to 1641 and spent a year abroad at the University of Königsberg. In 1649 he earned the title of Uppsala filosofie magister. Then he accompanied from 1651 to 1656 the country later Marshal and Chancellor Johan Göransson Gyllenstierna ( 1635-1680 ) on a study trip to Germany, Italy, Holland, England and France. After his return he became rector of the cathedral school of squid and 1658, ibid after his ordination, castle preacher and lecturer in theology. In 1663 he returned as pastor after Ljungby.

1668 he was appointed court preacher to Stockholm and to the religious instruction of the minor King Charles XI yet. entrusted. 1671 promoted to court preacher, he was also pastor at the Storkyrkan in Stockholm. As a confidant of the king Svebilius worked on all the major church projects of the late 17th century. He was involved in the revision of the constitution of the church completed in 1686 ( kyrkolag ) and in the drafting of a new liturgy and a new hymnal. He had the greatest significance as an author of the new statement on Martin Luther's Small Catechism. His work Enfaldig förklaring öfver dr Martin Luther lilla cateches, stäld genome frågor och svar of 1689 was considered a masterful introduction to the Protestant faith. It has also been translated into Finnish and Sami, and even into French and was binding in the whole of Sweden, until it was replaced in 1810 by the Catechism of Jacob Axelsson Lindblom.

Family

Svebilius was married since 1658 with Elisabeth Gyllenadler ( 1639-1680 ), a daughter of Bishop Samuel Enanders and granddaughter of Bishop Jonas Petri Gothus. They had seven children that were taken in 1684 with the name of eagle mountain into the hereditary nobility. Two daughters were married again with the bishops Carl Carlsson and Jonas Petri Linnerius.
