Oman national football team

The Omani national football team is the national team of the Sultanate of Oman, located on the Arabian Peninsula.

Early on, in 1965, Oman played his first international match. Against the Sudan, however, the team had no chance and lost significantly with 12:15. For the next 20 years the team was not able to win even one game. The best results reached the country in 1976 ( 1-1 against the United Arab Emirates) and 1984 ( 0-0 against Kuwait). The first victory was celebrated only on 24 September 1986, when Oman Nepal defeated 8-0. Since the early 1990s, the team was able to steadily improve their performance and unlock more and more to the other nations of Western Asia.

For a World Cup to Oman could not qualify. At the scarcest one failed in 2002 when the team moved into the final round, but there was no chance against China and the UAE.

After the team wanted to qualify for a 1984 Asian Cup for the first time, the Omanis reached 20 years later, the final round as they, among other things could beat the World Cup Fourth South Korea 3-1. In the finals, they lost the first game against Japan just 0-1 and broke up with 2:2 against Iran. Despite the 2-0 victory over Thailand, the Omanis dropped out because of Iran and Japan parted goalless. At the end of the Omanis took third place in the table.

In the qualification for the Olympic Games 2004 in Athens Oman was before the last match on the first place in the table and had to play second-placed Kuwait, while third- Iraq received in Amman Saudi Arabia in Kuwait City. A victory in Kuwait would have brought the qualification, but the Omanis did not come about 0-0 and playful their qualification chances, as the Iraq beat Saudi Arabia 3-1 and was able to secure the finals appearance on goal difference.

In Asia Cup 2007, the team retired from winless in the preliminary round, in 2009 she succeeded for the first time winning the Gulf Cup.

The most famous player is the Wigan Athletic Legionnaire Ali al- Habsi.
